Eversince Adam was a child, he never liked to walk the road of education, his dream was to become an actor.At his very young age, he passed a qualification exam to enroll in the Siu's TV training course.At that time, his family was living in an one room apartment. Other tenants of the building told his mother'how can this be?A half-sized man wants to be a star?'.The term half-sized referred to Adam being so skinny.
Enrolling at the Siu's TV,Adam's natural talents weren't
appreciated. He was unnoticeable,and more or less,a part time actor. Nonetheless, Adam being Adam,did not have any self-pity, he viewed this experience as a training for his future career.This job, at most, give him $100 HK dollar per day, therefore, he performed in shows for extra earning.
At the period of his life, Adam sustained an unforgettable event that taught him a life lesson. Once, he anticipated as a small role or supporting actor for a movie, and he had copious spare time to hang around the set. He saw a mini-bus was parking nearby with a so-called star who was sitting inside. Adam was tire so he also sat inside the mini-bus, the so-called star arrogantly reacted, "Hey, do you think that anyone can sit in here?". Although embarrassly insulted, Adam has been a civilized man so he just walked away. This experience taught him not to do to others what you don't want to be done to you.
Adam has always been interested in drama acting, when he became 20, Adam won the best actor tittle in a drama competition which was organized by a nearby resident association. The owner of Kin Shing movie company saw his outstanding talents and asked him to sign a contract of the Cantonese movie. Adam was striven by this opportunity and thought that his struggle would end at the young age of twenty. Sadly, his joyful reality soon taken a tragic turn--the Mandarin movies became popular and stepped on the declined of the Cantonese movies. Actors of Cantonese movies became jobless including Adam Cheng, his happy reality was flashily vanished.
How did the young dreamer survive? He started a textile business with a partner, used all the money he had, $1500 HK dollars, to buy a fabric weaving machine, which was quite a new technology in Asia at the time. He lost his business because the machine was too new and could not weave for the threads were always cut by the needles. It surely could not weave his sorrow for the dead of his father, which occurred as the same time as the evanescence of his business. What can we say to the unfortunate man who just finished his teenage years? As the sayings go:'As you lose your lover, you lose your army too.'or,'When the roof of your house has an aperture, a huge storm is coming'. Being the eldest son, the only son in a family without father, Adam put on his effervescent shoulders the thousand-tons weight of family's responsibility.
'When god consider someone as preciously important, one will put that person through many struggling tests.' Fortunately, Adam met Josephine Siao soon after, who appreciated his talents. She introduced his pictures and acclaimed him to all the people she knew in the entertainment industry. She was a bridge for him to enter TVB, the largest HK Television Broadcast. He started out in a music program. Tsoi Wo Ping, a program producer, quickly saw his many talents and let him started in the well known show EYT (Enjoy Yourself Tonight). During this time, actors in EYT were extremely busy. Adam was working harder than life, for instance, after making advertisements, he immediately needed to perform in the music program, and then had to perform acting--much arduous works indeed.
Later on, Because of his acting skill in the series "Chee Chai Kei", "Sam Siu", and"Bo Lin Dun", the audience started to favour him. In 1976, after nine years of pursuing his dream, Adam's acting career had reached its first peak of popularity from the "Story of Book and Sword" serial--his heroic image was formed firmer than the Great Wall here. Came right after were "The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre", "Tai Bo Fuk", and "Luk Siu Fung", those also captured the majority of the audiences.
Last but not least, in 1979, Adam first took the role of the wise, cool, and drop-dead handsome playboy "Chor Lau Heung". "Chor Lau Heung" serial has concluded any final battle that might occurred for his invincibility as n actor. Adam made "Chor Lau Heung" famous,It captured the hearts of millions of girls, it was the first Hong Kong's serial that ever entered the Taiwan market and other Asian countries. It received a grand welcome and Taiwan audiences went mad for Adam. Adam made the character "Chor Lau Heung" so famous that wherever "Heung Sui" appeared, there would be crowded of fans surrounded him and the fans were impossible to get rid of. "Chor Lau Heung" in the 80s and then in 1994, Adam once again too the role of "Chor Lau Heung" in "Heung Sui Chuen Kei" (the newest Adventure of "Chor Lau Heung"). His appearance, performence, charisma, and matial art skill is still as great as ever before. Once again, "Chor Lau Heung" awaken the Taiwan audience and captured their hearts. Indeed not only Taiwan audiences but "Heung Sui Chuen Kei" also formed more fans, younger and female fans, aground the world.
Beside acting, Adam's singing career is also successful as well. His first album "Oi Yan Kit Fun Liu" (Lover Got Married) received such possitive reaction from listeners. As his acting career climatax set in the 70s, the theme songs from his series also shocked all the audiences. Adam sings all the theme songs for his series, these songs are well-loved and many even conquered the top 10 on radio rating. First was "Tin Ngai Goo Hak", created such a proud name, it stayed in the top 10 of Radio Hong Kong for 17 weeks, it also was the hottest song for 6 weeks. Then, there were the theme songs of "The Story of Book and Sword"and "The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre", enormously famous and popular. Furthermore, the first "Chor Lau Heung" theme song, "Sai Yiu Yup Don Shan", "Lun Lau Chuen (this serial name in English is Rotation)", and "Jo Yan Oi Chi Yau" became top 10 Hong Kong Chinese songs within three years.
When stage acting was not well-known, Adam enlighten the stage. He was invited to be the leading actor in a grand show called "Cerano de Bergerac" (very famous French movie). Adam was of course took the role of Cerano, he made the character even better than that of the original movie if not better than life. Adam sang the emotion, the sorrow of love, just as crying and talking. His every word, every action and inaction penetrated the hearts of every audience who saw this show. Every emotion, whether happiness, indifferent,sorrow, ambiguous or certainty...etc...was upheld by Adam.
Until now, Adam has more than 40 music albums. One is a Chinese opera, one is Taiwanese (created from the theme song of "Heung Sui Chuen Kei"), and the rest are Cantonese music. Like his acting skill, his soothing warm voice is so charming and full of charisma. Adam can sing in any way, from Chinese opera to English music...as we can see, proven by fact, that Adam's art of singing is extremely skillful and specially talented.
Thirty years has passed like a dream; yet, Adam let those years continue to live on forever. We see the years evidently through his arts, the hero leaves his marks through his passage of life, Adam is indeed a true modern hero. One year, two years, or ten years can change anything or anybody dramatically except for Adam. He had been, and continue to firmly stand invincibly at the top in the Television industry. The higher the position is the more perilous, and Adam being Adam, still standing at the summit facing the world with a smile. Despise the peaceful time, strong winds occur, or any stormy period, Adam continues to firm his place at the very top. Only one thing can be say here, great man is unchanged in prosperity and in distress. The cost for his great recognition must be filled with sweats, tears, and blood.
Adam's success, as we can witness, is not caused by luck but by true talents. He can sing and dance, read and fight; he wills to learn everything to the best of his ability, not temperament but with earnestly. His qualities are a role model for other artists and for us to follow. And so our hearts, and many other fans' hearts those aren't reading this, are willingly stolen by him. He somehow urge all his fans to go after the experience of loving him rather than any other knowledge in life. He show us without any saying that on the account of pride, knowledge may often deceive us, but this gentle, loving affection we have for him will not deceive us. Knowledge tends to bread conceit, but love builds. Knowledge is full of labor, but love, full of rest.
